AARON Mclean has left Hull City to join Ipswich Town on loan until the end of the season.
Mclean had appeared all set for a move to Millwall last night but Ipswich were able to hijack the deal by matching the terms on offer.
A third Championship club was also thought to have shown an interest but City's preference not to lend Mclean to a potential Championship promotion rival saw Ipswich win the battle.
City boss Steve Bruce was happy to sanction Mclean's departure as he attempts to make room for new attacking blood during the January transfer window.
Mclean's fate appeared set in stone when left out of the last two squads to face Leeds United and Blackpool, but he has always struggled to prove himself to Bruce this season.
Without a goal since October 6, the striker started just one of the last 14 games.
Ipswich will offer a fresh start to Mclean this season and the move could lead to a permanent deal in the summer if he can impress Mick McCarthy at Portman Road.
Elsewhere, City are closing in on a £1.5m deal to sign David Meyler after he underwent the final stages of his medical today. Providing there are no hitches, he could be announced as a City player before tomorrow's FA Cup clash with Leyton Orient.
And winger Jamie Devitt is expected to complete a loan move to Grimsby Town this afternoon.
