Hull City striker Nikica Jelavic played a key role in the opening goal of the 2014 World Cup, but could not prevent his Croatian side from falling to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of hosts Brazil. Having been handed a start up front, the Tigers hitman was right in the mix when Croatia took a surprise lead through Marcelo's own-goal. The Brazilian defender put the ball into his net after Jelavic's scuffed shot inside the six-yard box caught him by surprise after just 11 minutes. From then on, the hosts fought to claw their way back into the clash and did so when Neymar levelled matters after 29 minutes, just moments after Jelavic's header was held all too easily by Brazil keeper Julio Cesar. In truth, Jelavic endured a tough time and was starved of both possession and chances as Brazil dominated and pushed for a match-winner. It eventually came from a 71st-minute Neymar penalty after a poor decision from the referee saw a debatable spot-kick awarded for a foul on Fred to let the hosts off the hook. Jelavic was withdrawn in the 78th minute as his side went looking for an equaliser, but Croatia did not get the goal their late efforts deserved in a frantic end to the clash and Oscar put the game beyond doubt with an improvised toe-ended strike from outside the area in the 92nd minute.
