'How a Good Samaritan restored my faith in the city of Hull'

When a man lost his car keys in Hull he feared the worst. But the kindness of strangers restored his faith in a city he had almost given up on. Here is "Mr G"'s story. ON returning to this city very early in 2013, I thought I had made a massive mistake. When you remove all the hype and propaganda about being UK City of Culture 2017, and look at the decaying buildings, soon to be third- world roads, especially at the junction of Hull Royal Infirmary, the food banks, starving families who spend some time every fortnight without food just to pay bills, the prostitution in Hessle Road, the drug users and suppliers, inconsiderate drivers who no longer indicate, false promises from local councillors, burglars, robbers, etc, it is a massive shock. But, despite the doom and gloom described herein, can I share with your readers a truly awesome event that happened on Thursday, May 15, while I was in the city centre. I had spent the day bill paying and shopping but before heading home and back to my car, I was involved in a heated exchange with the worst mobile phone provider in the world. During this exchange, I lost my set of keys. After retracing my steps twice, and going back to the last shop I was in, I had resigned myself to having to face a major problem. I phoned my friend, who provided me with a spare key for my home and telephoned the garage to come and gain entry to my car or remove it from the restricted parking area before retracing my steps yet again and returning to my vehicle. Upon approaching my car, I was overcome with amazement as I saw inside the vehicle a note from someone who had found my keys! He and his wife had picked them up and as they were returning to their vehicle, they just kept pressing the remote in order to discover if it was a car in the immediate area. I later discovered he had gone out of his way to borrow a pen and paper off some workmen to leave me the note. He also asked the workmen to keep an eye out for me if I returned so they could explain the situation to me. He did not take any contents from my car, he did not steal the car, he did not inspect any documents in my car, where he could have found my home address and gone on to burgle the same. No, he did none of that, he did what was right and acted with integrity, later meeting up with me and returning my keys to me. He was reluctant to accept a cash reward, but after some reassurance, he accepted a sum to cover his travel costs, it was far, far from enough though, so can I say through your pages, thank you again "Tucker".
