Guide to Queen's Baton Relay in Hull for Commonwealth Games 2014

As the countdown to the Commonwealth Games gets under way, Hull is preparing to welcome the Queen's Baton. 

So far, the baton has visited 70 countries and is currently travelling around the UK before arriving in Glasgow, where the games will be held from July 23 to August 3. 

To celebrate its arrival a host of sporting events will be held in the city, including: 

When: 7.45am. 

Where: The Deep, Tower Street, Hull. 

What: The baton will be welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Hull Nadine Fudge and Team England table tennis players. 

Councillor Fudge will hand over the baton to bearer Julie Williams, of Hull High Fliers Trampoline Club. 

The baton will then be taken over the Humber Bridge to Grimsby before returning to the city in the afternoon. 


When: Between 9am and 2.30pm. 

Where: Costello Stadium, Anlaby Park Road North, west Hull. 

What: Pupils from Ainthorpe and Endyke Primary Schools will dress in England kits and take part in athletic events. 

The baton will then visit both schools before arriving in the city centre later in the afternoon. 


When: 4.45pm-6pm.

Where: Queen Victoria Square, Queens Gardens and King Edward Street. 

What: There will be over 15 different sporting activities for families to try out, including a 60m athletics track at King Edward Street. 

There will also be a boxing ring, trampoline, chill out zone, orienteering, powerball, football, gymnastics, tennis and junior street games. 

Mascots Rufus, Rory, Amber and Airlie Bird will join in the fun.

Jeanie Fewster, Andrew Train and Siobhan Ayre will carry the baton around the various sporting activities in Hull city centre, while Hull will take on the city of Liverpool in a table tennis tournament at the City Hall.
