HULL City are understood to have been rebuffed in an attempt to sign Brazilian-born Bristol Rovers winger Alefe Santos.
Santos, 19, is out of contract but has been offered a new deal to stay at the Memorial Stadium, and it is believed that Rovers are confident of retaining his services after rejecting the Tigers' offer out of hand.
City were keen to recruit Santos and add him to their Under-21 development set up, but would now have to return with an improved offer or be prepared to go to a tribunal if they intend to continue their pursuit for the home-grown player.
The Tigers are looking to bolster their youth talent pool after acquiring hotshot Johan Ter-Horst from Folkestone Invicta.
Santos, who moved to Southmead with his family, scored one goal in 27 appearances last season after graduating from the youth team at the Pirates.
Rovers manager Darrell Clarke confirmed that a bid had been received – but was unwilling to confirm either the identity of the player or club involved and is determined to keep hold of his players.
"We have turned a bid down from a Premier League club for one of our younger players and that is where we are at," Clarke teased to the Bristol Post.
"We won't become an easy target for clubs who think they can make silly bids and then expect to take our players away."Wilcox irons out path for FryattSCUNTHORPE United boss Russ Wilcox is philosophical about the Iron's hopes of landing Tigers striker Matty Fryatt as his side join the long list of admirers.
Wilcox confirmed his interest in the 28-year-old, who is out of contract at Hull City, and responded to questions about the likelihood of the player dropping two divisions to League One by saying: "Never say never".
As many as six clubs have been reported to have lodged an interest in Fryatt – including the likes of Nottingham Forest, Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday, where he enjoyed a prolific loan spell last season.
Talks with the Tigers are still ongoing, though, with Ehab Allam still in daily negotiations with Fryatt's agent.
"Names are mentioned all the time and his (Fryatt's) was one that cropped up. Of course you are going to be interested in a player like Matty Fryatt," Wilcox told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
"There will be interest from Championship clubs, we know that. He went to Sheffield Wednesday on loan last season and did really well. I'm sure there will be interest from a dozen others.
"Never say never, that's what I say."Colback to snub Tigers for the Toon?SUNDERLAND midfielder and Tigers transfer target Jack Colback has turned down a £50,000-a-week offer from West Ham to join Newcastle and snub Hull City, according to the Daily Star.
The Black Cats were resigned to losing the out-of-contract Geordie, who was one of the worst-paid players in the squad.
His decision to cross the Tyne-Wear border to join their bitter rivals comes as a major surprise, with the Toon's personal terms falling way short of the Hammers' offer.Stockdale looks to City experience for Cottagers questFULHAM keeper David Stockdale is looking to his experience of the Tigers to ensure the Cottagers bounce back to the Premier League.
Stockdale believes Fulham's squad needs to be a mixture of youth and experience as the Whites look to return to the top flight, and he does have experience of winning promotion from the Championship with City.
"I'll have to take my experience at Hull," he told London24.com.
"We have to get more points than 20 other teams. At Hull we had some team unity and had a manager (Steve Bruce) who was a bit like this one.
"He wasn't afraid to make decisions. When it goes against you, you have to get behind the lads.
"You need to go to Bournemouth on a cold Tuesday night and then again on a Saturday."Chester impresses on international debut
AND finally, Tigers star James Chester made a promising start to his international career as he played the full 90 minutes for Wales against Holland last night.
Despite a 2-0 defeat in Amsterdam, Chester produced a fine defensive display on his debut, playing alongside Danny Gabbidon at the heart of the Welsh back line.
Chester came up with a magnificent first half block to deny Arjen Robben from close range, although Robben went on to open the scoring with Jeremain Lens adding a second late on.
Chester's performance drew praise from Wales manager Chris Coleman, who said: "We've got some good young players coming.
"James Chester was excellent at the back with Danny Gabbidon. They can all be proud because I thought it was a great performance."
