Bransholme residents say 'litter problem is worse than ever'

ANGRY residents in Bransholme insist littering on the estate is worse now than ever before.

They claim the problem has increased in recent weeks because of persistent litterers and fly-tippers.

They blame both children and adults and say the issue is affecting the whole estate.

Richard Clark, who lives in the Garths, said: "I have lived on this estate for decades and it has never been anywhere near as bad as it is now.

"You can't go down any road without seeing a pile of rubbish here or a load of litter there – it is such a shame.

"Some people would have you think this area is getting better, but it isn't.

"There are good people who live in Bransholme and who have been here all their lives. They are all sick of it.

"I go for a long walk every morning before getting home to have my toast and coffee. But all I ever seem to talk about over my breakfast is all the rubbish I've spotted.

"Kids are littering and often you see adults doing it too. It is disgusting and something needs to be done about it as soon as possible."

The Mail reported in February that residents blamed Hull City Council's crackdown on bin collections for piles of rubbish being found on grassed areas and footpaths.

It was estimated hundreds of blue bins were not being collected in Bransholme because of new rules.

The council introduced bans on the collection of blue bins that contain crisp packets, nappies and black bags.

Bransholme resident Maureen Harris said: "The rubbish is getting bad and we want something done about it as soon as possible.

"We have the odd volunteer going about and clearing up other people's mess, but it just is not enough. Good people should have a nice environment to walk about in."

Andy Burton, Hull City Council Streetscene manager, said: "We are reliant on people disposing of their waste responsibly and encouraging others to use one of the 4,000 bins across the city. Litter is a crime and people can report this to us by calling 01482 300 300 or emailing enviro.crime@hullcc.gov.uk."
