Key figures in the Humber's gaming industry have said there is a great pool of talent in the region. Platform's Lindsay West and Gateway Interactive's Louis Deane were speaking at the Building a Gaming Industry in the Humber talk as part of business week. Corporate figures, teachers and those interested in getting into the industry attended the meeting, where Mr West and Mr Deane highlighted the region's potential to have a thriving gaming industry. Mr Deane said: "We have around 250 students graduating from the University of Hull each year, who are extremely talented, to work in the gaming industry, but they are being taken on by businesses out of the region. "It is up to the region to realise the talent we have can be kept in the area and start developing a gaming industry. "The best thing about this business is that it isn't geocentric and we can retain the talent here in Hull, where there are lower costs for businesses and it is a perfect place for developers who have a great idea to set up." Mr West also highlighted the importance of taking the gaming industry seriously. He said: "It is a media platform which is one of the most profitable in the world, with games such as Grand Theft Auto V selling more than any other form of media in the world. "This is a serious industry and it needs to start being taken more seriously, from school level upwards. "A lot of people assume gaming is about coding and developing, but if a student has a passion for any subject in school, it can be used into the industry whether it is in art or writing, and that is a message we need to get across to them. "I'm sure that if you said to many students they could be involved in the gaming industry one way or another, there would be more young people who are a lot more interested in school."
