Hull KR centre Sean Gleeson has been forced to retire with immediate effect at the age of 26 following medical advice on his ongoing eye injury.
Gleeson was attacked outside a nightclub in Wigan at the beginning of March and his future has since been in doubt as he battles to overcome the lasting effects of the injuries he sustained.
Having spoken to doctors last week, who advised him about the dangers of playing again and the effect it could have on his long-term vision, he has now decided to call it a day.
"Coming to terms with this news has been difficult but I would like to thank my agent, Martin Shuttleworth, for his support and guidance during these hard times as well as Mike Smith at Hull KR for his support and understanding of the circumstances I have been going through," said Gleeson.
"I would also like to say a big thank you to the Hull KR fans for welcoming me to the club and to Hull, where I have made so many friends in and out of rugby league."
Gleeson was restricted to just six appearances for Rovers during his two seasons at the club, with his career hampered by injury since signing a three-year deal from Salford ahead of the 2013 season.
A back injury forced him to miss the first five months of last season, playing just six of the 30 games Rovers played. This season, he did not play a single game after suffering a broken leg at the club's warm-weather pre-season training camp.
