Bogus gardener cons Hull woman, 74, into handing over £100

A BOGUS gardener duped an 74-year-old woman into handing over £100. The woman was napping at her home in west Hull on Monday afternoon when the man walked into her house and said he had come to do some gardening work for her. He asked for £100 upfront, which she gave him, and said he would return to carry out the work. However, he has not been back to the house since. A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: "Bogus workmen are in season and driving around the whole country picking out properties that look occupied by the elderly." In recent weeks, conmen posing as roofers have targeted an 82-year-old woman at a bus stop in the Wold Road area, and an 80-year-old man in Anlaby, who was left so traumatised he locked himself in his bedroom. Meanwhile, officers have received a number of calls from banks concerned about elderly customers being approached by rogue traders. A police spokesman said: "We are getting a lot of calls from banks who are concerned for elderly account holders who have been 'brought' to the bank to draw large amounts of cash out for small DIY jobs.

"We need all the banks to keep an eye out and if they suspect a bogus tradesman is charging an elderly account holder over the odds, to call the police as soon as possible."

Anyone with information should call Humberside Police on 101.
