THREE streets off Hessle Road will this week become the first residential areas in Hull to have LED lighting installed.
The lamps have been fitted and residents are now waiting for electricity company YEDL to wire them up.
Local ward councillors have used their community fund to provide money for the new lights in Tyne, Ribble and Dee Streets.
For years, residents have had to put up with dingy orange lighting, leaving them feeling unsafe.
But now the new lights, costing £12,000, should be working within the next week or two.
Tyne Street resident Trevor Peach is relieved the lights are in place.
He said: "The lamps have been installed and they should be up and running at the end of the week.
"We are very satisfied with what has been done and we have been given everything we asked for.
"The previous lights have left us pretty much in darkness. They were just dimmer lights.
"These will make a big difference as they are like floodlights.
"It will improve the feeling of security for residents as there are quite a few older people living down here."
Fellow resident Peter Jackson, 75, is also relieved the new lighting will soon be up and running.
He said: "The lights are up and now we are just waiting for them to be switched on.
"Lots of people said we would never get the new lights, but here we are.
"There are some people who simply won't walk down Tyne Street.
"One woman I know goes the long way round to get to work when it's dark because she is too scared to come down Tyne Street.
"These are LED lights, which are the best around.
"It will make such a big difference to everyone down here."
The LED lamps will last for up to 20 years compared with six years for the traditional lamp, meaning the number of faulty streetlights will be reduced and reliability increased.
Ward Councillor Daren Hale said: "We are delighted to be able to improve lighting in these streets.
"They have been very dark and dingy.
"The new LED lights will help reassure people and make them feel safe.
"We are just waiting for YEDL to wire it all up, which should be very shortly.
"We think Tyne, Ribble and Dee Streets will be the first residential ones in Hull to receive the new LED lights.
"They have been installed in the city centre, but not elsewhere."
