AT JUST 20, Danielle Thomas did not think twice about taking on two children under the age of five who needed a loving home.
Now, the selfless young woman has been presented with a Spirit Award for her efforts.
Danielle, of east Hull, was also handed £200, a microwave and a food hamper from Environmental Management Solutions Ltd (EMS).
Danielle said: "The children's mother wasn't able to look after them any more so I've taken them on. I couldn't bear to see them go to anybody else.
"I've known them since they were born and I still speak to their mother. I have a real emotional bond with them.
"I was so shocked when I won the award after being nominated by a social worker who has been helping me.
"It has been a bit of a struggle and I'm trying to get a house sorted for us at the moment, so every little helps.
"The money especially will come in handy and the children had some toys donated for Christmas."
Danielle said her family are proud of how she is looking after the children and she is hoping to have them long-term.
"My dad always says he has a lot of respect for me but it wasn't a big decision," she said. "I wanted to have the children.
"I gave up my job as a carer and it is hard but we're getting there.
"I'd like to thank everyone who donated the prizes and EMS for the award."
EMS is a registered charity that works with a number of partners in east Hull and helps distribute money within the community. Andy Rees, of EMS Yorkshire, said: "I have nothing but absolute admiration for Danielle.
"We had quite a few good nominations for unsung heroes but Danielle's really stood out. I know when I was her age, it's not something I could have done, taking on two children."
The money was donated by the likes of the Freedom Centre in Preston Road and St Aidan's Church in Southcoates Avenue.
Andy said: "Young people do some fantastic things and I don't think some of them are rewarded enough.
"We wanted to show Danielle there are people out there who care."
