No Hull City player could compete with skipper Curtis Davies at the club's player of the season awards, says Peter Swan
CURTIS Davies was the toast of the Tigers last night after being crowned Hull City's player of the season.
I doubt anyone will have been surprised to see Davies walk away with the top honour at the club's awards evening.
There was no other contender to take the prize, not because others haven't performed, but because Davies has been so good throughout the whole campaign.
When Davies arrived from Birmingham City last summer I don't think anyone expected him to have the sort of impact he has had. We all knew he was a good player with the type of experience the Tigers needed on their return to the top flight.
But his form has been nothing short of sensational for City in the Premier League and he's played a major part in the success of the team this year.
When it came to contenders for the player of the year accolade, there's only Davies who has hit his best form for such a sustained period.
Ahmed Elmohamady has been terrific and an ever-present, but his performances have not managed to outshine Davies.
The only players who have managed to do that are Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore, who have put in some outstanding displays.
The reason they don't get the nod over Davies is their performances haven't been consistent enough.
I'm sure it has helped having a manager in Steve Bruce who played his position and there's no denying he's taken his game to another level this year.
The fact he was even being talked about as a contender to go to Brazil for the World Cup with England shows the type of form he has been in.
The way he handled the disappointment at being overlooked for England's friendlies says everything about his strength of character. There was no sulking, no loss of form, just a determination to keep getting the job done for City.
Who knows, perhaps that England dream is not over just yet. Phil Jones picked up an injury against City on Tuesday night and the Manchester United man may now be ruled out, so perhaps there may still be a call-up for Davies.
