A family-run fish and chip shop has been named among the country's best just after celebrating its first year in business.
Gisburn Chippy in Hessle has been listed in the country's top 50 fish and chip shops, according to Fry magazine.
Beverley couple Malcolm and Janette Collinson launched the business, in Gisburn Road, with their son Nigel on March 18 last year.
Fourteen months on and the self-confessed novices have turned into award winners.
Mr Collinson said: "We are delighted with the award.
"We have received our certificate and had it framed on the wall – we are very proud of it.
"We never thought in our wildest dreams when we first opened the shop that we would be recognised like this so soon.
"We wanted to take part in the competition and we are so happy we did.
"There were some issues to begin with in terms of our food but the locals put us right.
"They know how they like their fish and chips and we listened to them. That is something I would advise others to do – always listen to your customers."
Fry magazine says just under 500 chip shops entered the competition earlier this year. After months of secret inspections across the country, only shops with a score of 95 per cent and above reached the top 50. Results were announced at the end of last month.
Gisburn Chippy scored exactly 95 per cent and is the only shop from the region to have been recognised.
Mr Collinson, 61, said: "We will be entering again next year and our aim is to improve on our current 95 per cent score.
"Inspectors from Fry magazine made various trips to our shop – although we had no idea at the time. They scored us on cleanliness, quality of food, customer service and the time it took for customers to be served.
"It has been a very good year for us and this makes all the hard work seem worthwhile.
"We have done a lot of hours in our first year. Our son Nigel was instrumental in helping us launch the business.
"Many customers have said our fishcakes are the best in the area.
"More than anyone, we'd like to thank our loyal customers."
Regular customers Paul and Shelly Nicholson said: "We often go to Gisburn Chippy in Hessle and we are always very impressed with the fish and chips we eat there.
"We are delighted they have been recognised because the food is cooked just right and presented well, too.
"The shop is clean and tidy and the staff are always very nice and friendly."
