MULTI-million-pound plans to build a flagship new Hessle High School will get under way in October.

The town academy, which has split upper and lower school sites, will be redeveloped on a single site.

It has been chosen as a flagship project in the latest wave of the Government's Priority School Building Programme.

The secondary is set to be rebuilt at the Heads Lane upper school site, for completion in early 2016.

Executive headteacher Sarah Young said: "We are really excited to be the flagship rebuild project, which means we will be the first in the latest batch of schools in this region to be rebuilt.

"The new school will bring with it many benefits. It will have a massive impact on the learning experiences the children will have now and in the future."

The academy, which currently has a separate lower school in Boothferry Road, will save costs by having a single site.

Mrs Young said: "A more efficient use of budgets will enable us to focus on student achievement and quality of teaching and learning.

"There will be improved sports facilities for pupils, as well as community users in and around Hessle.

"We are also looking to develop a sixth-form college area, with improved facilities and seminar rooms."

Mrs Young said the investment will also help with the recruitment and retention of high-quality staff.

Other benefits will include better school meals provision and improving access for cars and buses, removing them from Heads Lane at peak school times.

A full refurbishment of the school's grade two listed Tranby House will restore the heritage aspect of the important building.

Mrs Young said detailed plans are in place to ensure the building work causes minimal disruption to pupils.

She said: "Although this is a very exciting time for the school community, we are all fully aware that the priority remains the continuous provision of high-quality teaching, curriculum provision and high standards of achievement during the rebuilding programme. As rebuilding gets under way, pupils in Years 7 to 9 will continue to be taught at the Boothferry Road lower school site, with Years 10 to 13 taught at Heads Lane.

Mrs Young said: "Space will be available to ensure they are taught away from construction areas, keeping disruption to an absolute minimum."

When finalised, the plans will be available for parents and residents to see.

Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart, who chairs the Government education select committee, said: "Delivering the best schools for our children, so the next generation can gain the skills they need to succeed in life, is a key part of the Government's long-term economic plan to secure Britain's future.

"This scheme targets funding where it is needed most and is already set to help Withernsea High School with an extensive building improvement project."

Parents and residents will be able to discuss the plans with school leaders on Saturday, May 24, at Hessle High School's Boothferry Road site, from 9.30am to 11.30am.
