We're privileged to play our part in community

YOU may have noticed that we didn't bore you with propaganda before the Leveson report, largely because our letters column and web comments showed no compelling case for us to do so.

Indeed, there has been silence on this subject, probably due mainly to two factors.

Firstly, papers such as the Hull Daily Mail are on a different planet to the national journalists accused of the truly reprehensible behaviour that brought about this inquiry.

Secondly, people are more worried about job losses, youth unemployment, petrol prices and feeding their families.

Most right-thinking people will, hopefully, realise that the local press does not hack calls, bribe the police or set out to ruin lives.

We are members of the community, worry about our own jobs and our own children's future. We live here and work to reflect local life.

Lord Justice Leveson supported this view, saying: "Our demise would be a huge setback for communities (where they report on local politics, occurrences in the local courts, local events, local sports and the like) and would be a real loss for our democracy." That was very kind, if a trifle over-blown in our humble view.

However, the report – once any spectre of political interference is removed – is largely welcome.

We will remain robustly independent and challenging because, if we don't, no one else will. And when we get things wrong, you will tell us to correct it.

That is our role and we are very privileged to play it.
