IT WAS A little less conversation and a little more king of rock'n' roll at a church service in Bridlington.

As part of the Elvis Weekender at The Spa, there was an Elvis Gospel Service at the Emmanuel Church in the town.

The occasion was all the more special for Naomi Milner and her two-and-a-half-year-old twins Talulah and Tee Jay, who were baptised at the service.

"My sister rang me in the morning to tell me there were going to be a few Elvis impersonators at the service," she said.

"I knew the Elvis weekender was at The Spa, but had no idea about anything at the church.

"It was a nice surprise and they were excellent. I don't mind Elvis.

"A couple of impersonators performed. I enjoyed the service and my twins were as good as gold while they were baptised."

The preacher at the service yesterday was Bishop Martin Wallace, a lifelong fan of Elvis and also an assistant Bishop in the Diocese of York and formerly Bishop of Selby.

He said: "We had a great time at the service and I loved the tribute acts.

"All the hymns were ones that Elvis had recorded.

"There was a lot of music and it was great fun."

Elvis Presley won three Grammy Awards during his lifetime and they were all for his gospel recordings.

The service was a celebration of the gospel music Elvis sang and included communal singing of some of the gospel songs, plus live performances by Elvis tribute artists and recordings by the man himself.

The baptism was carried out by Reverend Chris McCarthy.

Bishop Wallace said: "Elvis was the one who opened the doors for new wave modern music.

"He was a mix of saint and sinner, but although he started living in a poor home and towards the end of his life lived in a luxury mansion, he still knew in his heart his real home was with God.

"In Las Vegas, I enjoyed a marriage renewal with my wife in an Elvis chapel. I sang into Elvis's microphone in Nashville and I have played Elvis's piano."

The event coincided with the annual Elvis Weekender at The Spa, which concludes today.

Some of Europe's finest tribute artists graced the Royal Hall stage in Bridlington over the weekend, including an entry from Germany.

Bobby Diamond, east Hull's Elvis tribute artist, said: "It's been absolutely fantastic. I've seen a few old friends from last year and met some new ones.

"It's been a rocking good atmosphere. I think there have been more people here this year than last year."

Mr Diamond was among those taking part in the competition.

"To sing on the Brid Spa stage was amazing," said the singer for.

Mr Diamond was hooked on Elvis when he first heard Blue Suede Shoes and Always On My Mind.

"I couldn't believe it was the same guy singing both songs," he said.

"Everyone who worked with him said he was such a nice guy."
