THOUSANDS of leaflets are being distributed to mobilise support for the retention of stone cobbles in Beverley's Saturday Market.

East Riding Council wants to take them up as part of a £2.5m maintenance programme that will see pavements widened and parking areas altered as well as other changes.

Hundreds of residents turned out for a protest march last Saturday.

They delivered a petition to East Riding Council, which has already appointed a contractor and intends to start work in January.

Campaigner Richard Armstrong said: "Work does need to be done to accommodate disabled needs but there is no need to remove all the stone setts."

English Heritage has also said the cobbles should not be ripped up.

Professor Barbara English, of the town's civic society, presented a petition to county hall.

She said: "My message to the council is please listen to us."

But East Riding Council says public reaction to the planned Saturday Market changes has been "very positive".
