SUPERHEROES, Harry Potter wizards and princesses will be taking a dip and racing to the finishing line in a New Year's Day duck race.
There will be two duck races in the New Year's Day duck race in North Newbald, near Market Weighton, this year.
More than 250 yellow ducks will be bobbing along the Mires in the village to race to the finish.
The traditional duck race will then be followed by a freestyle event where youngsters can design and dress up their own ducks and throw them into the water to race to the finish.
Organiser Tracey Latham is hoping youngsters will get behind the new event and use their imaginations to create some unusual entries.
She said: "We always have a good turnout for the duck race. It's a great event and raises money for the village school.
"This year we've added a new dimension to the traditional duck race with a new freestyle event.
"We want youngsters to decorate their own ducks, which they can then throw into the water and we'll see who wins.
"The ducks could be anything from Harry Potter wizards to princesses or something different. We have no height restrictions but motors aren't allowed."
The 200-yard race starts on the Mires, off Galegate, in the Wolds village as the church clock chimes noon.
The ducks are thrown into the water and the children run along the side of the small stream and race the ducks to the finish line.
There will be a pre-race event from 11.30am with food and drink available.
Poppy Midgley, 6, said: "I want to make a pink princess duck and my dad wants to make a Batman duck.
"My ducks haven't won it before but I'm looking forward to chasing them."
The yellow ducks cost £2 and are available to purchase on the day.
Entries for the freestyle event should be brought along on the day.
Mum-of-two Victoria Budd said: "My children really enjoy the duck race.
"They love to race after the ducks and shout for their duck to win. It's good fun.
"My two are already very excited about creating their own ducks.
"It will add a fun twist to the usual event."
The annual event is organised by the Friends of Newbald Primary School, which raises funds for the village school.
This year, the race will be raising money to fund a nature garden and a projector for the school.
Mrs Latham, 35, of Newbald, said: "It's a fun event and I hope we get lots of support. Everyone is welcome and it'd be lovely to see some new faces.
"It's a lovely morning out for the children and fun for all the family.
"We have soft drinks and food available to help with any hangovers and there is always a good atmosphere.
"Usually, we get a decent crowd of people supporting it and I hope this year will be the same."
