A MAN has been jailed after his neighbours filmed him beating his pet dog with a piece of wood. Jason Appleby was caught on a mobile phone camera repeatedly hitting Bonnie, a six-month-old Dogue de Bordeaux.
He has been banned from keeping animals for life following the attack at his home in Hollym Road, Withernsea. When RSPCA officers arrived after being called by horrified neighbours, he told one: "I should have killed it with a hammer."
District Judge Frederick Rutherford jailed Appleby, 38, for four months. He said: "The dog was clearly utterly terrified. I have seen video footage in which you are obviously trying to injure it.
"The fact is you were clearly out of control and in those circumstances you sought to cause serious harm to that dog. This is a terrible case and custody must follow."
Appleby claimed he was hitting the ground and the fence near Bonnie to "scare it" after the dog tore up a dirty nappy in his kitchen.
