A MOTORCYCLIST has been killed on a the B1248 road, prompting renewed calls for bikers to enrol on safety schemes. Humberside Police are investigating the tragedy at Wetwang in which a 22-year-old man died.

Officers say the victim had been part of a four-strong convoy of bikers travelling on the country road towards Tibthorpe, East Yorkshire.

It is understood the victim, who was riding the second bike, lost control on a bend, before hitting a road sign in the village of Wetwang, near Driffield.

The accident happened at about 3.45pm on Saturday.

The victim has not yet been named but is understood to be local.

Ruth Gore, marketing officer at Safer Roads Humber, said she was unable to comment about the circumstances of the accident, but issued a plea for bikers to take advantage of schemes, such as Bike Safe, designed to help prevent deaths.

She said: "For £35, motorcyclists can attend the police-led Bike Safe scheme.

"Motorcyclists' skills are assessed by advanced riders and further training is offered, where necessary.

"The scheme runs each year and is about to draw to a close, but places can be book now for next year."

Ms Gore said all road users should familiarise themselves with the campaign, which is run across Yorkshire.

She said: "We know 70 per cent of accidents involving motorcyclists also involve cars.

"The campaign, called Someone's Son, asks those using two wheels to make themselves visible and ride in a responsible way.

"It also asks those on four wheels to look out for motorcyclists and think about the person on that bike."

Since it was launched in 2010, Someone's Son has earned plaudits from both drivers and motorcyclists.

Earlier this year, it collected the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award at a ceremony in London.

Ms Gore said this time of the year often attracts a high number of motorcyclists to East Yorkshire, which offers some challenging routes.

She said: "A significant number of motorcyclists tend only to ride in fair weather.

"At this time of the year we do find a lot of motorcyclists are taking to East Riding's roads for those final few rides of the year.

"This type of 'fair weather' rider will not be as experienced, perhaps, as those who ride all year round."

So far this year, 23 people have been killed in road traffic collisions in the Humberside Police force area.

Last year, there were 31 road deaths.

Meanwhile, officers say they would still like to speak to witnesses of Saturday's accident.

A police spokesman said: "Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the motorcycles travelling along the B1248 between Wetwang and Tibthorpe around the time of the collision."

Anyone with information should call Humberside Police on 101, quoting log 439 of September 7.
