Camels, sheep, a donkey, wise men, angels and shepherds paraded through Hull this afternoon as Holy Trinity Church brought a touch of Bethlehem to the city centre. Nativity Live! recreated the Christmas story with actors, real animals and even a newborn baby boy. The event, which was the result of months of hard work and planning, started on the steps of City Hall, with the story of the Angel Gabriel, played by Leroy Vickers of Ti Amero, appearing to Mary. After a procession down Whitefriargate - where there was no room at either the Bonny Boat or the Kingston Inn for the Holy couple - the baby was eventually born in a stable outside Holy Trinity Church.
Angela Clough, of North Ferriby, said: "I think it is a fantastic project to have locally and I think it is a great demonstration that words whisper but actions shout. It is truly about the Christmas spirit." A choir of angels sang carols with the gathered crowds before the glittering star of Bethlehem was hoisted on a cherry picker above the stable, where 10-week old baby Sidney Yardley took on the starring role of Jesus. David Treacher was in amongst the crowd. He said: "I think it is a shame the weather may have put some people off as this is a very good project and there should be more like this from the churches in Hull. "Holy Trinity have taken the initiative and have really put the word out about what this time of year is all about - Jesus and the the story of his birth."
