SOME of the nation's favourite British artworks have gone on display in Hull.

But you don't need to head down to the Ferens Art Gallery or any other arts venue in the city, for that matter, to check them out.

Instead, you might spot them on the way to work or going to the shops.

For 11 advertising billboard sites across the city are now featuring poster-sized copies of works by the likes of William Turner, David Hockney and Tracey Emin.

The Art Everywhere initiative is being spearheaded by the Art Fund, a national fund-raising charity for art.

Overall, 22,000 poster sites across the country are featuring 57 different pieces of art in what is being billed as the largest exhibition of its kind in the world.

Kirsten Simister, curator of Ferens Art Gallery, said people were in for a treat over the next fortnight during the unusual outdoor exhibition.

She said: "The success of recent exhibitions at Ferens has shown that art can have a very wide appeal.

"It is excellent that everyone has the chance to see more great British art works while travelling around the city.

"It adds further cultural interest, at a time when Hull is buzzing with culture as we bid for the title of City of Culture 2017."

Each site is also interactive, with a free app available to download which allows viewers to see more information about each painting as they stand in front of it.

The featured artworks were chosen through a Facebook vote which attracted 30,000 entries.

Cornelia Parker, the only living artist with a work in the Top Ten, said: "It's a fantastic project and to see my work reproduced on posters across the UK is fulfilling a long-held fantasy."

The exhibition is also being backed by the UK poster industry which has given up £3m of advertising space for the two-week period.

Money has also been raised through crowdfunding for the paper and print to convert the billboards into works of art.

More than 1,000 individual donations were also made to help pay for paid for the production costs.
