Whale and dolphin survey on East Yorkshire coast

EAST YORKS: A survey of whales and dolphins is taking place along the East Yorkshire coast to gather information to help the conservation of mammals in the area.

Members of the public will help monitor the animals from the shore and at sea in special boats leaving from Bridlington and other ports.

Wildlife experts at Bridlington have spotted a lot of recent activity including minke whales and harbour porpoises near Bempton Cliffs.

Sea Watch will use the data to create a picture of marine species in waters.

Sightings officer Danielle Gibas is hoping to receive recorded sightings of at least ten species.

She said: "We know that at least 12 species of whales, dolphins and harbour porpoise are likely to be around the coast at this time of year and we hope that, with the help of observers and members of the public, we may even have sightings of some rare visitors."

Members of the public are being urged to join in land watches to help gather data and can email sightings@seawatchfoundation.org.uk with their own sightings.

EAST YORKS: Thorngumbald Parish Council has a vacancy for a councillor.

A by-election to fill the vacancy will be held if ten electors of the parish write to the chief executive of East Riding Council at County Hall, Beverley, by Tuesday, August 13, claiming an election.

If the chief executive does not receive such a request, the parish council will be informed that it may fill vacancies by co-option, which means that the council members will elect a new member from those who have expressed an interest in joining the council.

If you would like to discuss the role, contact Avril Russell, Thorngumbald Parish Council, Village Hall, Main Road, Thorngumbald, HU12 9NQ.

EAST YORKS: Former South Hunsley student Harry Simpson has been selected for Team Great Britain at the European Youth Olympic Festival in The Netherlands.

Harry, 15, was always a talented tennis player during his time at South Hunsley and he is now part of a 44-strong Team GB squad at the 2013 championships in Utrecht.

The European Youth Olympic Festival takes place every two years for talented young participants from all over Europe.

Just like at the Olympics, athletes will stay in the Olympic Village and attend the opening and closing ceremonies.

There is also an Olympic flame and flag.

Athletes will take part in nine events: athletics, basketball, cycling, gymnastics, hand- ball, judo, gymnastics, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Harry will be competing in the singles and doubles competition in the tennis event.
