Westerman says Wembley can give FC season a different complexion

JOE Westerman is promising fans they will see 'a different Hull FC' side tomorrow as they look to book their place at Wembley.

The Black and Whites head to face Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup semi-final looking to prove the doubters wrong and cause an upset at the John Smith's Stadium.

And if they should do so, Westerman believes the result would put an entirely different complexion on Hull's season.

Win, and it's party time, with Wembley fever in full swing.

Lose, well, it hardly bears thinking about given their current league struggles.

At the club's media day this week, there was much talk of proving the doubters wrong and repaying the faith of Hull's passionate fans.

But Westerman says first and foremost, Hull's players owe it to themselves to lift their game and play to their full ability.

"It is a frustration, we don't do ourselves any favours to tell you the truth," said Westerman when asked about the club's current form.

"Against Bradford we just weren't good enough. It's not good enough for the players and we all know we are better players than we have been showing.

"We've had a good week, though, and we have drawn a line under it and said this is the one. We have one chance at this, and I think you'll see a different Hull FC."

Westerman is in no doubt that a win tomorrow will transform the current outlook around the club.

The past few weeks, their cup quarter-final win at Catalan aside, has brought criticism of both the players and coach Peter Gentle from the terraces.

But just 80 minutes from Wembley, Westerman believes all that can be countered with one performance of quality.

"This game is massive," he said.

"I think that with how we are going in the league, it's a game that could change everyone's perspective on us.

"Win this game and we are in the final of the Challenge Cup, which I think everyone at the club would be delighted with. That's what we want to do as players, you want to get to semis, you want to win finals and I think this is a big one for us.

"Peter has taken a bit of stick, but if we get a win that all changes. No matter what happens, we all have to stick together and come out with a performance that is going to get us a win. With the quality in the side, there is no reason why we can't.

"In these semi-finals, anything can happen. It's how we turn up and I'm sure we'll turn up and be ready to go. Obviously, we are underdogs going into the game. We just have to turn up and do it."

Hull will have left no stone unturned to get to the bottom of their recent problems in a bid to find the sort of form they showed when surging up Super League earlier in the year.

As Gentle has repeatedly stressed, there has been no lack of effort from his men, just a lack of composure at key times in games.

With that in mind, Westerman says it is now down to the players to ensure they carry out the coach's game-plan for 80 minutes if they are to succeed.

"We know where we have gone wrong and that's what we've practiced. We have been working hard to get back to where we were six weeks ago," he said.

"Attitude wise we are brilliant. Our defence is brilliant, you can see that week in, week out.

"It's no good just defending, though, you have got to be able to score points and at times we are just too dumb to score and we are not getting over the line.

"Yes, defence is a big part of your game, but you have got to be able to score some points to win, so we have looked at turning that around and making a few changes.

"Warrington are a good side, they have a lot of quality and they have players that any club would want.

"But I am looking forward to playing against them and I know our players are as a team. Winning would mean everything to us, the fans, and the club."
