HULL FC legend Johnny Whiteley has urged fans to get behind the players when they take to the pitch against Warrington tomorrow night.

Mr Whiteley, who scored 156 tries for FC over 15 seasons in the course of a glittering career, said the match would be hard but his old club could still win.

The Challenge Cup semi-final will be at Warrington's home in the Halliwell Jones Stadium and the hosts have a fearsome record.

Warrington have made it to the cup final three times in the past four years, only missing out in a 2011 quarter-final loss to eventual winners Wigan.

"From the chairman Adam Pearson down to the water-servers and the supporters, we're all a part of this and we've all got to erupt," said Mr Whiteley.

"The Hull forces will give them support but the players have got to give them something to cheer on.

"The supporters can't do it on their own – they need a lead from the players but if they can get that, I can assure you they will out-sing Warrington's supporters."

FC's form may have been off lately, with losses in their past five Super League games, and William Hill is offering 1/4 odds on of a Warrington win.

But hope still remains. Hull beat them earlier in the season and were the last team to inflict a defeat on Warrington with a 26-16 victory in May.

Fans took to Twitter to voice their excitement at the oncoming clash.

Andy Reeves wrote: "Wembley Tickets Booked! #Premature #ComeOnYouHull."

Keggle said: "Sunday, my heart will be in my mouth. Whether they do it for us, themselves, or each other; I don't care, as long as they do!"

Mason said: "My bro just informed me that if FC win on Sun he will be travelling from Oz just to watch that game @Wembley."

Mr Whiteley saw Warrington a few days ago and believes they represent a real challenge.

"I watched Warrington last week and without five of their best players, they still looked very quick," he said.

"The job in hand is going to be very, very hard and if Hull FC can win that game, I don't see any reason why they can't go on from there to do exceptionally well.

"It won't be a fluke, because I've seen on the pitches how well we can play."

FC coach Peter Gentle is also well aware of the task ahead.

He is under no illusions about the other side's abilities.

"Against Warrington you have to weather the storm early, then in the middle and then at the end," he said.

"They are a good team. They throw the same at you, week in, week out.

"We know what they are going to bring, it's more about us this week. We have to address our game and get our preparation and all the bits and pieces right to make sure that Sunday evening, we are ready to go."

Mr Whiteley will be at the match tomorrow night, come what may.

He is sure the away fans will be able to make their presence felt.

"I would crawl there on my back if I couldn't get out in the car," he said.

"We know our fans are one of the strongest forces in rugby league.

"The city is alive with support and it's up to the players within the side – we've got the capabilities but it's the confidence we need.

"I'm sure Gentle will have pulled out all the stops."

The players will be making their final preparations today.

Tomorrow night, when they step out onto the pitch, all the fans can do is cross their fingers and roar them on.
