EAST RIDING: Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart, pictured, is urging residents to sign a petition plea for a fairer deal for rural councils.
The Tory MP says urban councils collect more than 50 per cent more grant funding per capita from central government than rural councils receive.
Mr Stuart, who is heading up the national Rural Fair Share campaign, wants the Government to reduce the funding gap to less than 40 per cent by 2020.
He said: "Rural councils are getting a raw deal from the local government settlement, despite the universal acceptance that it costs more to deliver services in rural areas.
"We have to take action now to change this as the 2014-15 funding settlement is set to be frozen until 2020.
"The cross-party Rural Fair Share campaign has launched a national petition and I ask councillors and residents to add their voice to the campaign."
Copies of the petition will be at the MP's street surgeries. The petitions will be in Hornsea today, in Hedon on August 31; Beverley on September 14 and Withernsea on September 28.
