BIG-hearted pupils at an East Riding secondary school have handed over dozens of toys to help bring festive joy to disadvantaged children.

Students at Wolfreton School have donated more than 150 toys to the Viking FM Cash For Kids charity Mission Christmas Appeal.

Pupils at the secondary, which has upper and lower schools in Kirk Ella and Willerby, contributed dozens of toys, including DVDs, board games, books, toiletries and soft toys.

Pupil Sam Robinson, 13, said: "This is great as it raises awareness about the children and families out there who are less privileged than us.

"Giving to others makes you feel good. I hope they'll have a better Christmas than they would have done without this."

Fellow pupil Sophie O'Hara, 13, said: "The reason I wanted to get involved was to make other children happy. It makes you realise how lucky you are that you will be getting presents at Christmas.

"We got into the team spirit by turning it into a house competition to try to challenge ourselves to get more donations.

"We all wanted to make other children's lives better."

Schools, businesses and individuals are rallying round to respond to The Mission Christmas Appeal.

Holly Riby, who works for the charity, said: "It's amazing how the local community is coming together at Christmas to give so much to those less fortunate."

The toys were collected by volunteer van driver Phil Ruxton, who works at Croda.

He said: "We allow our employees to contribute to charitable causes in their communities and we're really excited to work with Cash For Kids in this way."

Stacy Macleod, head of Owen House at Wolfreton School, said students were excited about backing the Christmas appeal.

She said: "As soon as we heard about the Mission Christmas Appeal we thought it would be a great opportunity to get involved, as our students have a fantastic reputation for being charitable."

Alison Wood, assistant head for key stage three at the school, said: "I am very proud of how our students have got behind the appeal to make a difference to others."

Viking FM's Cash For Kids and Princes Quay shopping centre, Hull, have linked up on Mission Christmas. They are appealing for people to buy one extra present this year to bring joy on Christmas morning to a disadvantaged child.

New and unwrapped gifts can be donated at drop-off points across Hull and the East Riding.
