A severe weather warning remains in place this afternoon after spectacular lightning storms lit up skies over Hull and the East Riding this morning.
Hull Bridge Road in Beverley was closed by a level crossing failure after lightning affected power supplies in the early hours.
The closure affected traffic at the Norwood crossing, near the Lady Le Gros pub, but the crossing reopened by around 9am.
Trains on the Hull to Bridlington line were delayed by up to half-an-hour for much of the morning after damage to signalling equipment near Beverley.
A severe weather warning for much of the country, including East Yorkshire, has been issued by the Met Office because of an "increasing risk" of thunderstorms or longer spells of thundery, torrential rain.
The "yellow" warning - which means people should be aware of possible disruption - is valid for the whole of today and tomorrow.
Rain is expected to continue into this evening, although brighter weather is forecast to return tomorrow morning, when temperatures will rise back to around 23C.
A Met Office spokesman said the public should be aware of the risk of localised disruption to travel, and more generally to summer holiday activities, due to, for example, surface water flooding.
The Environment Agency warned of a "low risk" of flash flooding during the heaviest of the showers.
