A MEMORIAL to pay tribute to the city's lost trawlermen has moved a step forward.
Three competing designs for The Memorial to the Lost Trawlermen of Hull are now on display at the Hull Maritime Museum.
The winner's design will come to life as part of a new memorial area at St Andrew's Quay.
The designs have been produced by three teams selected to take part in the design competition, which has been organised by Stand – the St Andrew's Dock Heritage Park Action Group, with support from Hull City Council.
Charles Pinder, chairman of Stand, said: "We are delighted with the quality of the submitted designs.
"The competitors have demonstrated considerable skill and commitment to developing their ideas in response to our aspirations for the memorial.
"We are now sharing their ideas with the public and their views will be considered by the jury panel when it meets to review the designs."
The three shortlisted designers are:
Colour Urban Design Limited, an international orientated landscape architect company, which is currently shaping the landscape of Qatar for the 2022 World Cup;
Dress for the Weather, Factory Architecture and artist Jacqueline Donachie, who form a Glasgow-based collaboration in art and architecture
Plincke, a leading UK company of landscape architects and urban designers based in London and Manchester.
Stand has searched for a permanent memorial to the thousands of trawlermen who lost their lives at sea, for several years.
It was decided a memorial was needed to give people a special place to visit and remember those who played a pivotal role in the city's history.
The site for the memorial was secured on the water's edge at St Andrew's Quay in 2012 and the design competition was launched in March.
The competition has generated significant interest from architects, artists, landscape architects and designers and nearly seventy expressions of interest were received from throughout the UK and abroad. Three competitors were selected on the basis of their approach and experience to enter the final stage of the design competition and respond to Stand's brief.
One of the judges on the panel is Hull MP Alan Johnson.
Mr Johnson said: "A permanent memorial to the thousands of trawlermen who lost their lives in pursuit of their livelihood is hugely emotive and significant to the city's communities."
The exhibition at the Hull Maritime Museum runs until Tuesday.
