A Patrington woman will have to pay back £4,360 for housing and council tax benefit fraud. Charlotte Staves, 35, of Humber Lane, Patrington, appeared at Hull Magistrates Court where she admitted failing to promptly notify East Riding of Yorkshire Council of a change in circumstances affecting her entitlement to housing benefit and council tax benefit. Investigations carried out by East Riding Council established that Staves had failed to declare that her partner had started work in May 2011. Along with paying back the £4,360 she fraudulently claimed, Staves was given a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay costs of £476.40. Jeff Taylor, principal fraud investigation and enforcement officer at the council, said: "Potential fraudsters should be aware that if they fail to notify the council when their circumstances change, then they run the risk of being brought before the courts and receiving a criminal record. "The public are the victims of benefit fraud and I urge East Riding residents to report their suspicions to us, providing as much information as possible." Anyone who suspects benefit fraud in the East Riding area can call the 24-hour benefit fraud hotline in confidence on 01482 394949, text 07786 200850 or email benefit.fraud@eastriding.gov.uk in confidence.
