WHEN Hull KR spent a day with the troops at Leconfield, it set them up for a winning streak.

Now, Robins fans will be hoping history doesn't repeat itself.

Yesterday, rival players from Castleford Tigers were put through their paces by Army fitness instructors at the military base.

"It lets them learn more about each other and do something different from the norm," said Sergeant Gareth Young, one of the soldiers in charge on the day.

"They work as a team and that's what it's all about for 80 minutes on the pitch.

"After Hull KR came last year, they went on an unbroken run."

The West Yorkshire Super League team spent the day doing physical training.

They did a personal fitness assessment, matching themselves against the demanding standards of the British Army.

This was followed by an afternoon of gruelling team- building exercises.

The players carried logs around a field, working in groups to keep themselves going.

Coach Ian Millward praised the Army staff for their help.

"Their co-operation has been excellent," he said.

"We couldn't do it without them.

"The players enjoyed it – they like getting out of the same routine."

The training day gave his team something different to do.

With eight new players on the side, Mr Millward also saw it as a useful chance to bond.

"They were nervous about it," he said.

"They know what to expect in normal training but this is an Army base."

The coach is keen for some of Leconfield's luck to rub off on his side.

"If we could get a good run, that would be great," he said.
