Father Lee delighted to see Hull FC's Ben Crooks make a name for himself

BEN Crooks, son of Great Britain international Lee Crooks, nephew of Hull FC legend Steve 'Knocker' Norton.

It's a familiar label, a badge of honour that has been cherished, but nonetheless, one that has worn a little thin and now become unnecessary.

At 20-years-old, Ben Crooks has already stepped out of his famous family's shadow, carving his own career on the back of a series of blistering try-scoring performances for Hull this season.

Whilst the Black and Whites' form is fading, his is red hot.

Seven tries in his last two appearances have lifted the current favourite for Young Super League Player of the Year to third in the league's leading scorers chart, with 20 so far.

A total of 15 tries for his wing partner Tom Lineham also proves he's just as adept at putting his team-mate away as he is scoring himself.

The young man with all the talent has defied the initial back-biting and snide comments questioning his talent, and is fulfilling all his promise.

Yes, defensive mistakes have highlighted he still has some way to go.

But with the likes of Jamie Peacock and John Kear calling for an England call-up this season, it is no surprise the FC fans have taken him to heart in the way they did his father and uncle.

Proud father Lee is hoping Ben can finally start getting the recognition, not for his surname, but his quality as a rugby league player in his own right.

"Ben is making his own path in the game and I hope people will draw a line under the family name aspect and start to talk about him, not as my son or Steve Norton's nephew, but just as Ben Crooks," said Lee.

"I'm especially conscious of it and it is time for me to take a step back now and just watch him play as any other dad.

"He needs to take his own path and be allowed to make a name for himself on his own. He won't forget where he has come from, but I am hoping he can be allowed to mature now without the constant mentions of myself and Knocker."

For Lee Crooks, his contribution to Ben's development has changed in recent years.

Having guided his son from the age of five through school rugby, his early amateur days and to a move to Hull, the former forward has had to take a step back.

"Ben is a Hull FC player, it's up to the Hull coaches to tell him what they want him to do and for Ben to make his own choices," he added.

"I still speak to him, but when I speak now it's about passing on my own experience of being in his situation.

"I've told Ben the challenge now is the weight of expectation, that is what he has to cope with now. The challenge is for him to perform regularly with more eyes on him and the opposition starting to target him now too."

If anyone knows what it is like to be thrust into the spotlight in Hull it is Crooks senior, who broke through himself into the Hull team as a teenager.

The similarities are not lost on Crooks, who feels his son is more than capable of handling the attention. And how does he feel watching on as a fan and a parent?

"I'm immensely proud of what he has achieved already," adds Crooks.

"I'm not an excitable person when I am watching rugby and I don't get too emotional, but every now and again I get excited and seeing Ben score four tries at Castleford was one of those moments.

"I really enjoyed the Castleford game, it was great to watch him doing so well, but disappointing the Black and Whites lost because it took the edge off what Ben did.

"I'm sure he'll have many more nights like that though."
