RECORD numbers raced through the streets, all with one aim – to help beat cancer.

Almost 1,400 women, including many currently battling cancer and others remembering or celebrating the lives of loved ones, united for the Bridlington Race for Life.

More than £80,000 is expected to be raised from the 5k race, which was held at Sewerby Hall and Gardens.

Organiser Jenny Murgatroyd said: "Looking at all the 'back signs' that women wear at the event, declaring why they are taking part, is a very emotional experience.

"Many have survived cancer themselves or are participating in tribute to loved ones whose lives have been touched by the disease.

"I feel so proud and grateful to everyone who has taken part in Race for Life in Bridlington and to all the family, friends and colleagues who supported them."

Taking part in the race was Sylvia Hood and Maxine Phillips, of Beverley, who were running with the All For One Choir.

Sylvia said: "I am running in memory of my son, David, who was just 18 when he died from cancer six years ago.

"It is a very emotional day, but I have seen the work charities do for people suffering with cancer and it is nice to give something back."

Maxine said: "This is the first time I have taken part in Race for Life. I lost my mum from the disease in 2004."

Margaret Pollard, of Bridlington, is currently battling breast cancer and attended the event to see her family race for her.

She said: "My daughter has come up all the way from Nottingham today to do this race.

"Unfortunately, I cannot run at the moment due to my treatment, but it is such a fantastic event to come to and very emotional to see everyone who has been affected by cancer."

A moment's silence was held to remember those family and friends lost to cancer, before chairman of East Riding Council, Claude Mole, officially started the countdown for the race.

Councillor Mole said: "I think it is wonderful to have almost 1,400 people here raising money for Cancer Research UK.

"I lost my wife to cancer eight years ago, so this event is very meaningful to me."

First past the finish line, with a time of 20 minutes and 59 seconds, was 23-year-old Sarah Wood, of Bridlington.

This was the ninth time Sarah had taken part in Race for Life.

She said: "I am really pleased with myself for coming first. I have done this race for the past eight years.

"I was racing for my uncle, my grandma and my friend, Tom Kepping, who has, hopefully, fought off cancer."

Also taking part in the event were sisters- in-law Wendy and Linda James.

Wendy was diagnosed with cancer last year.

She said: "It makes me very emotional being here, as I keep thinking of everyone who has been affected by cancer."

Wendy's husband, Robin, attended to cheer the ladies on and even ended up taking part in the race warm-up, which was led by aerobics instructor Heather Francis.

"I've done the warm-up here for the past six or seven years and every year it just gets better and better," Heather said.

"The number we have running at Bridlington is just fantastic."
