Council scraps Hull busking fee

A registration fee charged to buskers wanting to perform in the city centre has been dropped. The £10 fee introduced by the city council recently hit the wrong note with some musicians. They complained the council's move was an attempt to regulate busking. They also claimed it put people off performing because of the extra cost. Those who did pay the registration fee were given an official busking badge by the authority. Now, a new council report has revealed the charge had been scrapped, allowing buskers to register for free. Due to be discussed by councillors next week, the report says: "After discussions with a number of regional busking representatives and buskers themselves, it was evident that the price of the badge, particularly in the current economic climate, was proving a barrier to some people registering." The report says efforts are now being made to persuade buskers who regularly perform in York to travel to Hull to play in the city centre.
