IT IS a gym steeped in history, producing boxing champions at every level.

Now, coaches at St Paul's Boxing Academy will turn their hand to helping unemployed teenagers in Hull by offering a coaching qualification.

Coaches at the North Church Side gym devote their time voluntarily seven days a week to helping youngsters become champions in the ring.

But the gym, which was opened in 1948, stands for much more than just producing boxing champions.

Coaches want to help steer children onto the right tracks in life, using the discipline of boxing to teach them right from wrong.

From the moment they walk into the gym, young children are taught respect, time-keeping, listening skills and a host of other values.

Now, coaches want to use their skills and experience to help teenagers interested in sport and coaching get qualifications.

Mike Bromby, head coach at the gym, said: "We decided to do this because we want to help the kids.

"Educating the kids in the boxing gym is another reason we are here.

"We do our best for them in competitions and in their boxing and we want to do our best for them in life as well – that means in their education, too.

"This is helping them get a qualification and, hopefully, enable them to get paid careers out of it in the sports industry."

The course is a chance for those who do not like traditional classroom learning to get involved with sports coaching out of a scholarly environment.

Mike said: "The kids on the course will be sharing the same gym that coached Luke Campbell to Olympic gold, as well as current national amateur champions.

"It has a great atmosphere.

"From a training point of view it's great and, from an education point of view, it's relaxed.

"We want people to come here and succeed and get what they want out of it.

"It is a great environment for those who maybe don't like the classroom.

"In an environment like this people will feel so much more at ease.

"As coaches we already have the experience in how to get the best out of people."

Those taking part will be awarded an NVQ Level 2 in Coaching Activities.

The course is free and open to youngsters aged 16 to 18, who are not in full-time education, training or employment.

It is also open to school-leavers.

Connor Tommins, 16, is just finishing his GCSEs at Andrew Marvell College, in east Hull.

He is already a boxer at St Paul's.

He said: "It's great to see if this is something to go into and at the same time I will get a qualification."

Ashleigh Waudby, 16, is also just finishing her GCSEs at St Mary's College, Hull.

She said: "It is a qualification to get and I am interested in boxing.

"It is great this club is being able to offer this because it keeps you active and is something to make your parents proud of.

"It is also great for my CV."

Rhys Robinson, 16, who is finishing his GCSEs at Trinity House School, is also doing the course.

"Sport is what I like doing," he said. "I want to go into coaching, so this is ideal for me. This will give us a chance to step up and show people at the gym what we have got."

St Paul's trains some of the brightest amateur talents in the country, with many fighting for national titles.

It is also home to a stable of successful professional boxers, including Jason Cunningham, the flyweight International Masters Champion, and Samir Mouneimne, featherweight International Masters Champion, who are both on the brink of major honours.

The five-week course starts at the end of the month. It will be two days a week, from 10.30am to 3pm.

It consists of a BTEC Level 2 in Sport and a Level 2 NVQ in Activity Leadership.

The practical element will be taught at St Paul's in the form of non-contact boxing sessions.

No previous boxing experience is needed as the focus is on preparing young people for potential careers in sport.
