HE may be only 12 years old but one rising table tennis star is already dreaming of Olympic glory.

Cottingham youngster Harry Dai has won the under-12s National Table Tennis Championship, mirroring success in the under-11s version last year.

He has now been chosen to represent England at the eighth Euro Mini-Championships in France in August.

Harry said: "It was more nerve-racking this year because I was the defending champion and others wanted to beat me.

"I was putting in 20 hours a week, practising before the tournament.

"My aim is to play at the Olympics and I feel I have a good chance of doing it.

"I just find it really enjoyable and it's something anyone can play.

"With just a bit of hard work you can really improve.

"My friends really encourage me and always say well done when I perform well."

Harry and his coaches are now preparing for the championships in France in August.

Harry, said: "I went to France last year for the under-11s but I didn't do that well.

"I only came back from China the day before we went to France.

"I think I will have a better chance this time."

The youngster, who attends St Mary's College in north Hull, first took an interest in the sport in 2008.

Proud dad Xiudian Dai said: "Harry has carried on since last year with reinforced determination.

"His attitude has been praised by his coaches but he has always been very hard-working and committed.

"I am extremely proud of his achievements and that he was able to defend his title."

Harry has had to juggle his table tennis success with his school work.

Mr Dai said: "I was concerned what affect it would all have on his academic work but his teachers say there is no problem and he's doing very well at school.

"Harry is extremely optimistic and has ambitions to compete in the Olympics in the future. Hopefully, he will be able to achieve that."

St Mary's Table Tennis Club coaches Shane Bradley, former nation champion Dennis Neale and Hull player Luke Carrington have been working hard to get the best out of Harry's talent.

Mr Bradley said: "You can't get much better than winning the National Championships two years' running.

"It is Harry's attitude and dedication that is the key.

"He was training 23 hours a week leading up to the tournament and normally trains at least 16 hours a week.

"He even goes for a run round the fields first to warm up."

Mr Bradley believes Harry can go all the way.

He said: "Harry is easy to coach. He doesn't argues and listens to what you say.

"The sky is the limit for him. Table tennis needs a star over here as we didn't do well at the London Olympics.

"He is one the English Table Tennis Association is looking at."

Harry lives with dad Xiudian, 49, mum Liqun, 43, and sister Lucy, 14, in Cottingham.

Although Harry was born in Beverley, his family are originally from China, where table tennis is a national sport.
