POLICE will carry out random checks to catch out motorists under the influence of drink and drugs, as part of a summer crackdown.
Humberside Police will launch a two-month summer drink-driving campaign this weekend.
It will run until Wednesday, July 31, and involve officers breathalysing drivers and giving out advice.
Every year, police arrest numerous people who think it is acceptable to have a few drinks and get behind the wheel.
Roads Policing Inspector Mick Dring said: "Driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs can significantly impair the ability of any driver, which can result in severe consequences.
"The role of police officers across Humberside this summer is to continue to educate drivers and change the attitudes of those who think it is OK to use the road after drinking or taking drugs."
Police will carry out random stop-checks at all times of the day and night. These will include early-morning checks and drivers are encouraged to think twice before driving after a night out.
Aaron Wilkinson, manager of 35 Taxis in Holderness Road, said their main slogan is "don't drink and drive".
With a fleet of 300 cars, they often report suspected drink-drivers and have seen the results first-hand after major collisions.
He said: "I once found a girl slumped in a car smelling of drink after crashing at a supermarket.
"I have never driven after drinking. I don't agree with it – it's just not worth it.
"We do all we can to encourage drivers to phone a taxi after a night out."
During last year's campaign, officers administered 3,014 breath tests across the force and 192 of those tested positive.
A total of 629 tests were administered to under-25s, with 40 coming back positive. Of the 2,385 tests given to over-25s, 152 were positive.
Insp Dring said: "This year, we will look to reduce those numbers even further.
"I would also like to ask the public to continue to support police in our attempt to crack down on those who drink-drive, by reporting offenders.
"Each year, people come forward and pass on information that enables officers to catch those who break the law, quickly and efficiently."
Anyone who wishes to report a person suspected of driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs can do so by calling Humberside Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
