FIREFIGHTERS are warning families to be careful when using barbecues after hot coals sparked a serious blaze.
Crews were called to Dawn Court in Hedon when embers set a garden shed alight.
The fire wrecked fencing, sheds and decking in four nearby gardens.
Guttering and windows were also damaged.
Fire service community safety manager Phil Leake said: "Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire but it caused extensive damage.
"This really does highlight the importance of taking care when barbecuing.
"Embers can retain heat for some time."
The barbecue's owners had used it on Sunday night and emptied the ashes into a plastic bag the following morning.
They began to smolder and set fire to the shed.
Mr Leake said: "I urge residents to ensure the embers are fully out when they have finished barbecuing by pouring water over them and only emptying them into a steel container as plastic can be flammable when coming into contact with heat."
Families are encouraged to set up barbecues away from wooden fencing and sheds. They should also be kept some distance from buildings.
Commercial firelighters should always be used for charcoal barbecues.
People using gas ones should make sure they are in good condition before switching them on.
Mr Leake said: "We want people to enjoy the good weather but would urge them to be cautious when having a barbecue.
"The safest way to stop a fire from starting is to pour cold water on the embers once finished."
