Time to have two video refs after Magic Weekend try debacle - Hull's McRae

HULL FC director of rugby Shaun McRae has supported Hull KR chairman Neil Hudgell's call for change in the wake of the controversial Magic Weekend derby.

The Black and Whites snatched a 22-16 victory at the Etihad Stadium when video-referee Steve Ganson failed to spot Chris Green had come from an offside position to score the winning try.

The error brought stinging criticism from Hudgell, and an official apology from the RFL.

Now, McRae says it is time for a full review of the video-refereeing system, and consideration of adding a second person to the decision making process.

"What I would say first off is I saw Neil's statement and I agree with him completely," McRae told the Mail.

"This is not an issue between Hull FC and Hull KR, as the try for Chris Green should never have been awarded, and we all accept and acknowledge that.

"This is an RFL issue now and it has opened up the debate as to how this can be prevented in the future.

"I can come to terms with a video-referee decision being awarded that not all agree on if it is a matter of whether a player grounded the ball correctly or not at speed, or even an ambiguous obstruction.

"But when a player is stood five yards in front of the kicker, as Chris was when Danny Houghton kicked the ball, and the try is wrongly awarded, something needs to be done to prevent it from happening again."

McRae believes the RFL should now look at having two officials making decisions via video replays, as they now do in the NRL.

And he says had this been in place last weekend, Green's try would not have stood.

"I'm not someone who says we should follow everything the NRL does, but they now have two people making video calls, and it is being introduced at the international level also," he said.

"For me, the referee should make the first call, and say whether he thinks it is a try or not, asking the video officials to either agree or disagree with his initial call.

"Then, when passed to the video-referee, you would be looking for the two people to agree on the decision, and if they can't it goes back to the match official's original view.

"I am sure had we had that process in place on Saturday, Chris' try would have been disallowed.

"Steve Ganson may have tracked the wrong man, but a second person would surely have pointed out that the player he had tracked had not scored the try.

"Of course, there is an added cost to introducing an extra level of checking, but for the two Sky games shown each week, I can't imagine this would be too much, especially if it avoids a repeat of Saturday."
