HULL FC's acquisition of Jacob Miller is a real signing of intent from the club under owner Adam Pearson, who has continually repeated his desire to see the Black and Whites become a force many times.
He and coach Peter Gentle have pushed long and hard to bring in quality half-backs and now they have, quite amazingly, attracted a genuine young overseas star.
At just 20, Miller is a signing for the future of Hull FC as much as the present.
Building teams takes years, with quality British players mixed in with overseas players who are enthusiastic and eager to play good rugby for their club.
The key is always having the right blend of young, local talent in a side.
These are the players who are fully aware of what it means to wear the club shirt, and are the driving force behind a successful team.
Hull have been getting this right in recent times under Pearson and Gentle.
New contracts have been handed to Tom Lineham, Ben Crooks and Jamie Shaul, which along with the one-year extension to Richard Horne's deal, show the club value extremely highly the voice and passion of local players.
Look at Leeds. They have benefited for years from the consistency of Kevin Sinfield, Rob Burrow and Danny McGuire, mixed in with their big name signings.
Go back a few years and look at St Helens with Sean Long, Paul Sculthorpe, Kieran Cunningham and Tommy Martyn, mixed in with top overseas stars.
Wigan have it now with the likes of Sam Tomkins, Michael McIlorum, Sean O'Loughlin, Liam Farrell and Josh Charnley, mixed in with the likes of Pat Richards and Blake Green.
In fact, Wigan are the perfect model to copy, as they have a majority mix in favour of local and British players, most coming through the Wigan youth system.
It's fantastic to see as a British fan.
There really is no great secret, it does take time, and having the right people staff wise in the right positions is vital.
But FC are without question heading in the right direction under Pearson and Gentle's astute guidance.
I'm by no means wishing 2013 away here either, but 2014 will hopefully again see the Black and Whites improve towards challenging for, and winning, trophies again.
