A THUG attacked a takeaway driver while high on cocaine, then went on to cause traffic chaos when he crashed on the A63.
The road was closed for five hours, causing major tailbacks for rush-hour drivers, when Simon Green smashed into a lamppost after driving around Hull at high speeds.
Green, 35, was high on cocaine when he raced through the city streets in his Ford Mondeo at speeds of up to 90mph.
Hours earlier he had attacked a pizza delivery driver in his car using a carpet gripper as a weapon – which was later found in his car.
Prosecutor Phillip Evans told Hull Crown Court: "The driver lost control, he started to swerve and the rear of the vehicle shook and spun around three or four times and collided with some bollards and a lamppost, before coming to rest half on the pavement.
"It was necessary to close the A63 and it caused enormous chaos to thousands of commuters on their way to work."
It happened on February 27, as reported by the Mail at the time.
Green initially attacked a takeaway deliveryman who had been called to Coltman Street, west Hull, to deliver pizzas.
His car was approached by five men armed with weapons, including baseball bats and sticks.
Green used a carpet gripper to smash the window of the vehicle as the deliveryman frantically tried to drive off.
Green, of Runcorn Garth, west Hull, pleaded guilty to assault, possessing a weapon, dangerous driving, driving with no insurance and driving while unfit through drugs.
The Honorary Recorder of Hull and the East Riding, Judge Michael Mettyear, told him: "This was a nasty offence of carrying an offensive weapon. It must have been terrifying.
"A few hours later you were in this car driving much too fast.
"You crashed the vehicle, causing all sorts of inconvenience to lots of people, in circumstances where you were unfit through drugs."
Green has now been jailed for two years, given eight penalty points on his licence and has been banned from driving for two years.
He was also ordered to take an extended retest.
The court heard Green has 104 previous convictions.
In 1996, he was jailed for ten years and four months for a series of robberies and in 2005 he was jailed for five-and-a-half years for blackmail.
