HE CAPTURED the hearts of a nation when he shed a tear at the World Cup in Italy more than 20 years ago.

Now, Paul Gascoigne is coming to Hull's KC Stadium.

Gazza will be speaking about his colourful life and footballing career at a sporting dinner.

The 45-year-old, who has recently been treated at the Providence Project rehab clinic for depression and alcohol addiction, will be at the Kingston Suite at the KC Stadium on Thursday, May 23, from 7.30pm, as part of his Comeback tour.

Tony Dunn, who runs Castleford company Sports Media Promotions, is bringing the former Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers star to the city.

"This is a chance to meet one of England's greatest players and hear stories of his career and eventful life," he said. "He is a living legend, who may never come back to Hull again."

Gazza, who also played for Newcastle and Everton during his long career, was famously reduced to tears for England after receiving a yellow card in the semi-final of Italia 90 against West Germany. It meant he would be suspended for the final, had England won the game.

The Geordie is also known for a spectacular group-stage goal against Scotland at Wembley in the UEFA Euro 1996 tournament.

However, since his retirement from professional football, his life has become dominated by his mental and emotional problems, particularly his battle with alcohol.

Mr Dunn, though, is confident Gazza will attend the event.

"I spoke to him on the phone last week," he said. "He is sounding and looking good.

"He will be attending and he's looking forward to coming to Hull.

"I worked with Gazza last year. He likes to come out and meet the fans."

Mr Dunn recently brought boxer Mike Tyson to Hull.

"The Mike Tyson event went really well," he said. "It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

"The Gazza event is taking place in the Kingston Suite at the KC Stadium and there will be about 300 tickets. This will be a sit-down sporting dinner."

There will also be a comedian, compere, auction and raffle on the evening.

Ticket prices range from £100 (front row, including the dinner and photograph with Gazza) to unreserved tickets which cost £50 (dinner, but no photograph).

Anyone wanting more information or tickets should call Mr Dunn on 07912 983671.

Mr Dunn has also revealed that five-time world heavyweight champion boxer Evander Holyfield will be speaking in the city on Friday, September 13.
