LANDOWNERS are taking the initiative with a plan for 600 new homes in Bridlington.

The town's Area Action Plan calls for 3,300 extra properties to be built in the next 16 years.

Following "significant interest" from developers, a consortium of landowners is asking for public opinion about building on Strawberry Fields in Kingsgate.

Spearheaded by Pegasus planning consultants, the proposal is for about 600 properties, including affordable housing, new roads and infrastructure.

There will also be areas of open space and landscaping.

A Pegasus spokesman said: "Like most of the UK, the growth in population and the trend for smaller households places pressure on the demand for new housing.

"To meet this need and support the regeneration initiatives for Bridlington, the town centre and harbour area, about 3,300 new homes will be required in the town between now and 2029.

"The adopted Bridlington Area Action Plan indicates that continued population growth in Bridlington is needed for a prosperous future that will allow the town centre to play a key role in the future of the town as a whole.

"The proposals represent a substantial investment in the housing market and economy of Bridlington.

"The landowners have had significant interest from national house building companies, which demonstrates a confidence in the town and its ongoing regeneration that will continue to make the town an attractive place to live."

David Dowson, chairman of Bridlington Business Forum, said: "It is great news for the town and its regeneration plans that out-of-town developers have faith in Bridlington's future plans.

"This is exactly what we were looking for. Hopefully, with Pegasus's planning expertise and experience, an early approval of the scheme will create local jobs in the not too distant future."

Plans showing how the site could be developed are going on display and residents are invited to help shape the proposals prior to the submission of a planning application.

Thousands of leaflets have been sent out and people are invited to visit the project website at www.strawberryfields-kings gate.co.uk and leave comments.

An exhibition will be held at Emmanuel Church in Cardigan Road, Bridlington, on Saturday, May 18, from 10am to 3pm.
