Hull City are back in the Premier League after the most dramatic afternoon in their history. Despite a missed penalty and a last-minute Cardiff equaliser, a 2-2 draw at the KC Stadium was enough to take City up as Watford lost at home to Leeds. It was undoubtedly the most nerve-racking and incredible 90 minutes' of the Tigers season. Here are seven of the other games that shaped one of the most memorable campaigns in the club's 109-year history.Hull City 3 Bolton 1September 1 2012 A first real glimpse of the future under Steve Bruce and the birth of a dynamic new style. The new Tigers boss had taken a significant gamble in dismantling a side that finished the 2011-12 season eighth in the Championship. In a starting XI that included six of his own signings - including debutants Stephen Quinn and Ahmed Elmohamady - City were excellent value for their second win of the Championship season. Sharp, incisive and dominant throughout, the Tigers comfortably dismantled a Bolton side widely tipped to be a front-runner for an immediate return to the Premier League. Goals from Sone Aluko and Abdoulaye Faye cancelled out Chris Eagles' opener for the visitors, before the stage was set for Quinn to wrap up the points just 24 hours after signing a three-year deal with the Tigers. "I've played in the Premier League before and it's the promised land," said Quinn after his dream debut. "It's where everyone wants to be and I'm no different. I believe this club can get back there with the quality we've got here in the squad." How right he was.Sheffield Wednesday 0 Hull City 1October 6 2012 This was the weekend where City stopped the rot threatening to take hold of their bright start to the Championship season. Three consecutive defeats against Leicester, Peterborough and Blackpool had Bruce's men approaching the international fortnight gasping for breath and etched an unflattering question mark next to their promotion credentials. But timely sanctuary was found in South Yorkshire. The hero of the hour was undeniably Aaron Mclean. On for less than two minutes as a late substitute, the out-of-favour striker dispatched the perfect first touch into the bottom corner of Sheffield Wednesday's goal to settle a fixture wracked by the fear of failure. It was the beginning of a run that saw City win 10 of their next 15. And while it may not feature in many fans' end-of-season highlights, Bruce will reflect on this stubborn victory at Hillsborough as fondly as any.Derby 1 Hull City 2December 21, 2012 Captain Robert Koren had raised a few eyebrows when locking his gaze on the automatic promotion places in the run-up to City's Christmas programme. Yet, as the Tigers found their season's zenith with a giant leap up to second in the Championship - level on points with leaders Cardiff - the Slovenian was suddenly not alone in thinking big. A fourth consecutive victory, City's 10th in 14 league games, arrived at play-off hopefuls Derby County and, as the campaign turned for home, fanciful talk of the top two suddenly had its roots set in reality. Goals from Koren and Abdoulaye Faye either side of Michael Jacobs' brilliant strike for the Rams in first-half stoppage time provided the platform for another heart-warming defensive effort to drag Bruce's men over the line for a seventh away win of the term. It felt like a watershed moment. Not since Phil Brown's promotion-winning side grabbed a 3-1 victory at Barnsley in April 2008 had City been in such a position of authority, and only goal difference prevented the Tigers from usurping Cardiff at the very top of the tree. No longer could City stay under the radar. Each and every one of their rivals at the summit of the Championship now knew a grave danger lurked in black and amber.Hull City 2 Leeds 0December 29, 2012 Was this the Tigers' greatest ever performance at the KC Stadium? Exuberance, skill and panache coursed through the side from first kick to the last, as a pitch-perfect display saw the Tigers ruthlessly dismantle their most loathed opponents in an occasion to rank amongst the finest witnessed by City fans during the past decade. To gape at City in full flow was a footballing privilege. The crisp passing and fluid movement was enough to make Leeds dizzy. Only a host of missed chances ensured Leeds were spared outright humiliation but this was pinch-yourself stuff thanks to second half goals from Corry Evans and David Meyler. "We absolutely smashed them," said Bruce, "Men against mice." Even Leeds boss Neil Warnock was gushing in his praise. "I think Hull are a one-off, I don't think there's another team like them in the league," he said. "They are by far the best organised team in the league. I would be surprised if they got overtaken." The closing weeks of 2012 had been nothing short of outstanding. Since losing meekly to Burnley on November 24, 17 points from a possible 21 had catapulted City up to second in the Championship and built up a monstrous gap of 11 points between Bruce's men and seventh placed Nottingham Forest. A finish outside of the top six was suddenly incomprehensible. Instead, City were thinking big. Very big.Hull City 2 Derby 1February 12 2013 Just one win from the opening five league games of 2013 had left fans bemoaning the famous manager of the month curse, after Bruce deservedly took the December award. City's stuttering form saw them turfed out of the automatic promotion slot they had first claimed at Pride Park. But on an epic Tuesday evening at the KC, Bruce's men snatched a late, great victory to lift them back into second place. As was the case in the reverse fixture 53 days earlier, it felt like a giant leap for the Tigers. Providing the rhythm for a dance into second spot was an inspirational Egyptian beat. After watching new arrival Gedo mark his home debut with a goal after just 90 seconds of being introduced as a half-time substitute, Ahmed Elmohamady upstaged his countryman for drama in the 88th minute when restoring a lead cancelled out by Jamie Ward's volley four minutes earlier. Victory was a springboard for three home wins in just eight days and put City back in the driving seat for promotion.Huddersfield 0 Hull City 1March 30 2013 In a promotion race beset by the generosity of its contenders, Steve Bruce's men finally accepted the invite to make themselves comfortable in the Championship's most envied spots. A hardy 1-0 victory at Huddersfield Town in front of the television cameras on Saturday evening was perhaps the moment where everything changed. The travel restrictions imposed on fans by West Yorkshire Police had left a dark cloud hanging over the contest. The solidarity shown by City and Huddersfield fans in a protest march before the game was heartening. So too was a victory that left the Tigers with a four-point advantage as they kicked for home with seven games remaining. Within 24 hours of seeing their nearest automatic promotion rivals, Watford and Crystal Palace, flap and flounder, City grasped the nettle through George Boyd's stunner and held on for dear life at the John Smith's Stadium. It was the Tigers' 10th away win of the season and they again unearthed their uglier side to delight Bruce. All of those wins required a moment of class and at Huddersfield it came from the left foot of Boyd, who struck a clinical drive high past goalkeeper Alex Smithies and into the top corner. It was a moment of supreme quality and his fourth goal in five influential starts since signing on loan from Peterborough.Ipswich 1 Hull City 2April 13 2013 There are some victories in football which feel worth so much more than the three points they put on the final column in the league table, and for City this hard-fought 2-1 win at Ipswich was just that. Any deflation felt after a 1-0 home defeat to Watford 11 days earlier was banished. After that promotion clash at the KC, Watford players had danced on the pitch. Now, after securing consecutive wins, it was the Tigers' turn to celebrate as they opened up a six-point lead on their closest rivals with only four games left to play. The scenes of jubilation at the final whistle suggested players and fans alike felt they had one foot firmly placed in the Premier League. As James Chester made clear, City would now have to throw it away. Bruce was quite rightly delighted with the desire and resilience of his side. After dominating the first half, they battened down the hatches under bombardment in the second. A point would have been a welcome return as the clock ticked down, especially given Watford's loss at Peterborough, but then up stepped Robert Koren, just seven minutes after his introduction off the bench, to head home and put City on the brink of a return to the big time. City's players and fans went wild, and with good reason too. The Tigers now sat in a position nobody at the club could have dreamed of when they started the season. Bruce offered words of caution - there was still plenty of hard work to do - but it looked like it was time to put the champagne on ice. But then City never do anything the easy way, do they? ...More on Hull City's promotion
