AS SHE smiles for the camera, Irene Dale looks the picture of happiness.
But just a few years after this photograph was taken, her life was brought to a brutal end when she was stabbed as she slept alongside her husband of more than 50 years.
The loving grandmother, 78, died after the attack at her home in Summergangs Road, east Hull, last weekend.
Her husband Allan, 80, was also stabbed, but is recovering from his injuries.
Both were attacked in their bed.
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murdering Mrs Dale and attempting to murder Mr Dale. He cannot be identified for legal reasons.
Her family, who are too distressed to speak about their ordeal, have released the picture to the Mail.
Mr and Mrs Dale were described by their neighbours as the "nicest, loveliest couple", who were always together.
They had twin sons and a daughter, who would regularly visit them at home, and several grandchildren.
The couple were regularly seen walking their dog, Pye, along the street, where they had lived for 41 years.
Lisa Coxon, who has lived next door to the Dales for three years, paid tribute to the couple.
She said: "They were wonderful people, just the nicest, loveliest couple you could know.
"I can't imagine anyone wanting to hurt them. They did everything together and I never heard them argue. I just can't believe it.
"I can't imagine how Allan must feel."
Police launched an investigation into the stabbings after receiving a call at 3.30am on Saturday morning.
Mrs Dale was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mr Dale was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.
The 17-year-old was arrested shortly afterwards in Carr Lane, Hull city centre, which was cordoned off by police for most of the day.
He appeared at Hull Youth Court on Monday, when he did not enter a plea to the charges.
Prosecutor Andrew Stirling said: "Both of them were stabbed while they were in their bed. Sadly, Irene Dale has died. Her husband survived."
Mr Dale has been speaking to detectives investigating his wife's death as they try to piece together what happened.
It is believed police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the stabbings.
The 17-year-old is due to appear before the youth court again later this month, when his case will be committed to Hull Crown Court.
