Improving Hull FC put league aside to aim for Challenge Cup glory

PETER Gentle says his Hull FC side have earned their top-six position, but will not get ahead of themselves after slowly climbing the league ladder in the past month.

With the league set for a two-week break as Hull return to the Challenge Cup action with a home tie against Wakefield, Gentle says their improved league form is welcome, but will be put to one side as they chase cup glory.

"We have earned our league place with our footy in the last month," said Gentle.

"We are not concerned right now with where we are on the table, though, if we keep winning we'll be there or thereabouts at the end.

"The league is put to one side now, everything has shifted already towards the cup. That competition is one we really want to go after."

Hull prepared for their cup test by cantering to a 48-12 victory against the Broncos to record their fourth win in five Super League games.

Scoring six second-half tries they put a dour opening 40 minutes behind them to build on last week's encouraging display against Wigan.

A double for in-form centre Ben Crooks, as well as a brace for Tom Briscoe helped Hull on their way as FC celebrated the return of Daniel Holdsworth and Gareth Ellis' debut in style.

"There were a lot of good things to come out of that game," added Gentle.

"We brought Daniel Holdsworth and Richard Horne off early, but Holdsworth was always going to come off on the 50-minute mark, so we pushed it out to 60 minutes.

"Horney tightened up and because of the score we were able to get him off.

"Joe Westerman dislocated his thumb, but it's gone back in and hopefully it will be okay."
