Elmohamady says promotion decider like a Champions League final

AHMED Elmohamady has every faith Hull City will rise to the occasion when they face their very own "Champions League final" against Cardiff City on Saturday.

Steve Bruce's Tigers are preparing for arguably the biggest game in the club's 109-year history as promotion to the Premier League and a £120m windfall beckons at the KC Stadium this weekend.

A final-day victory over Cardiff will guarantee City return to the top flight after three years in the Championship, but anything less would allow third-placed Watford to snatch second spot with a win over Leeds United.

An angst-ridden finale was assured after the Tigers gathered just one point from a possible nine against Wolves, Bristol City and Barnsley, but Player of the Season Elmohamady says one last opportunity will not be missed.

"It's a huge game, it's like our Champions League final against Cardiff," Elmohamady told the Mail.

"Cardiff are the champions so we know it will be a tough game but we believe we can get the three points we need to win promotion.

"It has not been easy (in the last couple of games) but that is football. It's not pressure, it's just football. Sometimes it can be difficult.

"All the players and staff here are working very hard in training this week to make sure everyone will be happy on Saturday."

With just one point separating City in second from Watford in third, the margins for error could hardly be smaller on the final weekend.

A lead that once briefly stood at seven points has been whittled away, but Elmohamady knows City can render the late charge futile with their 25th win of the campaign.

"It is up to us to win on Saturday and we will be promoted," he added. "We are not focused on Watford.

"They are a good team who play really good football, but we believe we have been better than them this year.

"We will show everyone on Saturday what we can do and hopefully that will be enough."

For Elmohamady, one last show of character from the Tigers could have a direct bearing on his future.

A clause resides in his season-long loan deal from Sunderland to make the transfer permanent if City return to the Premier League and manager Bruce makes no secret of his desire to see Elmohamady remain in East Yorkshire.

Starting 40 of City's 45 league games this season, the Egyptian international has been crowned both the club's and the supporters' Player of the Season.

However, there is still work to do for Elmohamady to sign off his loan fully satisfied.

He added: "The awards have surprised me because it has been such a great season for all the players. It has not just been me.

"It's been a great season. I have really enjoyed it here with these players.

"It is a fantastic group, especially the gaffer.

"He took me to the Premier League to Sunderland and down to Hull as well, so I thank him for giving me this chance.

"It's been an absolutely fantastic season for us all and now we must make sure we end with promotion on Saturday."
