TWO fatal road accidents involving pedestrians are being investigated by police.

A woman was killed when she was hit by a lorry in Hessle Road, west Hull, on Saturday, while a man died on Friday after he was struck by a lorry on a pedestrian crossing in Holderness Road, east Hull.

The great-grandmother, of the Gipsyville area, was pushing her one-year-old great-grandson when she was struck by the lorry near St Andrew's retail park in Hessle Road at the junction with Rugby Street.

The accident happened just before 1pm and the road was closed for a few hours while the road was cleared and the crash investigated.

The woman died on the way to hospital but the toddler suffered only cuts and bruises.

A friend paid tribute to the victim, saying: "She had taken him for a walk when the accident happened.

"She was part of a wonderful family and she doted on them."

The fatality was the second in just two days in Hull.

A man, in his 60s or 70s, died after he was also struck by a lorry in Holderness Road on Friday afternoon.

Floral tributes have been left at the scene, referring to the victim as "Irish John".

In one card, Jonno and Andrea wrote: "We will miss our Irish little leprechaun."

Another card said: "Thinking of you so much and we will miss you always. You are a great man."

Andy Whiteman is the warehouse manager at the British Heart Foundation store, close to the scene of the accident, and was one of the first on the scene.

He said: "I had just come in on to the shop floor when I heard a bang and then someone screaming.

"I ran out and saw what looked like a bundle lying at the side of the truck.

"Everyone was standing by in shock and there were mothers with children nearby.

"I ran in and grabbed a heavy sheet to put over the man, as his injuries were horrific.

"It is something that will stay with me for a long time."

Mr Whiteman feels more needs to be done to make Holderness Road safe.

He said: "It is very difficult to cross safely around here. It's a very busy road with a lot going on.

"The area down by McDonald's and the junction with Southcoates Lane are also bad and it won't be long before there is an accident there."

Anyone with information about the Hessle Road accident should call Humberside Police on 101, asking for extension 1127, and anyone who can help with the Holderness Road accident should also call 101.
