HULL City fans are keeping the faith – despite the Tigers' bid for automatic promotion suffering a major wobble.

City may now have to beat the champions Cardiff at the KC Stadium to secure that all-important second spot in the Championship and promotion to the Premier League.

But, despite Hull's 2-0 defeat by Barnsley at the weekend, determined fans remain optimistic Steve Bruce's men can do it.

Steve Mattinson, 35, of west Hull, was at the match.

"The game was a bit of a nightmare but it's one of those things that happens," he said.

"I think the team will be up for it on Saturday and, hopefully, the home crowd will help.

"I think Steve Bruce will have had a word with them all individually.

"We didn't want to leave it until the last game of the season but that's Hull City for you.

"I will be going to the game on Saturday and I really do believe they can do it."

However, his partner, Kayleigh, was not so optimistic.

She said: "It was rubbish on Saturday and we just had no fight.

"I'm not confident we can do it, to be honest."

Chris Winn, 45, of west Hull, was also at the game and believes City can get the right result against Cardiff.

He said: "Saturday was disappointing and there seemed to be a lack of passion on the field and in the terraces after the first goal went in.

"But, hopefully, we will have some injured players back and we can pull out the right performance.

"I see no reason why we can't beat Cardiff but the fans have to play their part and be the 12th man."

James Evans, 25, a teacher at Sirius Academy, was at the match.

He insists it is important not to get too down-hearted.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed but we need to remain positive as promotion is still in our hands," he said.

"I felt there wasn't enough passion and Barnsley wanted it more.

"We have to raise our game against Cardiff." Goals early in each half from Jacob Mellis and Chris O'Grady condemned City to defeat.

It means they have taken just one point from their last three games – all against the Championship bottom three.

Martin Walker, of the Avenues, west Hull, watched the game at the Linnet and Lark pub.

He said: "Barnsley outplayed us and the better team won. It's a bitter pill to swallow.

"We have got just one point against the bottom sides recently, which isn't good enough. But we just have to fight on and beat the champions.

"I feel it is now 50-50 but we can still do it."

His wife Jenny said: "I'm massively disappointed. We have played so well most of the season but we seem to crumple under the pressure.

"But, even if we don't get automatic promotion, we have done it in the play-offs before."

Russell Woollass, of west Hull, said: "I am really disappointed with the result but it is still up to us.

"We have played 45 games this season but now it comes down to just 90 minutes.

"I think we will nick it against Cardiff and hopefully Leeds will do us a favour and beat Watford."

City are now just one point ahead of Watford. If they match or better Watford's result on Saturday, the Tigers will go up.

If not, the Tigers will face the play-offs.
