A MUSIC venue that has hosted some of the Hull's biggest gigs is going up for auction next month.

The Lamp in Norfolk Street, near the city centre, was forced to close in June last year.

Owner Gavin Brennan, who ran The Lamp for six years, said it was no longer "financially viable" and he had no choice but to call it a day.

A number of business- people have shown interest in the 4,321sq ft venue and although an offer was made, parties were unable to reach an agreement.

It will now go up for auction on May 15 at Beverley Racecourse, with a guide price of between £65,000 and £75,000.

Neil Eglin, branch manager at Dee Atkinson and Harrison Estate Agents in Hessle, said he had shown three people around the property in one day, with further viewings booked.

He said: "One of the potential buyers was interested in turning the venue into offices, while others weren't willing to talk about their plans.

"The guide price was significantly higher to start with and lowering it has resulted it a great response.

"It needs quite a bit of work doing to it but it is set up ready to operate as a public house.

"We are certainly marketing it in that way and it would be nice if someone was willing to spend the time on it."

The Lamp was once a popular venue where a number of national acts played. The Arctic Monkeys attended an after-party there.

Mr Eglin said: "There are three different areas inside and a flat or offices above them.

"It's in a brilliant location and everyone knows the area.

"We are expecting it to be a good lot at the auction, the price is great and it's a good opportunity for someone."

The auction will begin at 6.30pm and anyone interested in The Lamp is being advised to book a viewing by calling 01482 644515.
